Back Cracking

  • Yeah, I can't do this…at all. I lean back, do the twisty thing in a chair, and so on.

Any tips? I see others crack their back and it looks like fun. Plus, mine feels like it wants to crack sometimes, but I'm not getting the movement right.

punch yourself in the back of the neck.

  • so punching yourself in the back of the neck is obviously not the best advice.

have you ever tried cracking your back after a hot shower/bath? You might be having difficulty because your muscles are too tense. The heat might be able to help especially if your a beginner. Try taking a really hot bath and trying the twisting method or leaning back in the chair. Let me know how that goes…I might have some other advice if that doesn't work.

    Good luck.

i dont know why on earth you would WANT cracks… i just wish i was normal and not have any cracks in my back/neck.

  • I think what you may be experiencing is something entirely different. The cracking we are speaking of is mostly for relief, at least in my case it is. I actually experience some adverse effects if I don't crack my back/neck. As far as my other joints go, the stiffness just becomes unbearable sometimes and I'm just a creature of habit 🙂

Yes but the point is I never used to have any cracks in my back/neck until i got punched (see below for full story)

i look forward to your comments.

a bit of background… im 19 years old now.

however, when i was at school, i was very quiet and a target to get picked on. i got the "usual" bullying which i have long forgotten, but the one event that sticks out is this:

when i was in year 8 or 9, i was innocently doing my work in a tech lesson.
then, out of nowhere, i get a massive BANG on the back of my neck. i turn around and see someone from my class called sam walking off briskly.
this guy sam: i dont think i ever even spoke to him let alone do anything wrong to him, so he had no reason whatsoever to punch me.
it was an assault basically, if it happened outside of school i could have gone to the police. but at the time, because i didnt actually see him doing it, i didnt want to make a fool of myself in case i was wrong.... i didnt even feel i could tell a teacher as i didnt actually see it happening.

(i did tell the teacher another time about the other stuff sam did to me, and he got in big trouble for it, but that is no consolation for the punch and the effect it has had).

The effect it has had: well, my neck still clicks and cracks every day from it. Every morning i wake up to a bad neck. At points during every day it clicks and aches. However I have been to many doctors, physios and chiropractors who cannot get rid of the clicking.
Its a psychological thing: everytime it clicks it reminds me of sam, and makes me think that my present (6 years on from the event) is still being completely dictated by what he did.

Ok so more about the present: i am at uni and I am seeing an NHS CBT therapist (cognitive behavioural therapy). This is outside of uni but its going fairly well. Had 9 sessions so far out of a possible 20.
It is nice to share my feelings.
HOWEVER, i am a bit worried in the long term because it is still not really changing anything, i will have to be blunt with my therapist about this when i next see him, i hope he isnt offended.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

  • Thanks Tinamarie! I will try that.

I think you're right, I can't twist that far because I'm not loosened up. I'll try it…stay tuned.

DJ, thanks again for making this all about you.

sorry, i dont want to be like this, blame sam, if he never punched me, i would not be on this forum now.
think about that for a second, that is a FACT.

  • Some people just can't. I never could until after getting an osteopathic adjustment and even now it's just one section of my lower spine that will crack and only when I twist to the left. If you're one of these people it may be best to recruit a willing partner. Sometimes it's easier for another person to apply the required amount of pressure. I know for a fact the pressure required for the osteopath to crack my back was pretty startling, and he had already set me up for the adjustment by having me make a half-turn on my side so that most of the slack had already been taken out. The flip side to it is that of course you need to proceed gently and carefully.

Heck, I'd love a good back-crack right now.

  • Oh if the twisting normally won't get a crack or leaning back in a chair won't work. Try doing a yoga pose crack. In my fitness class we were doing a yoga pose (one that stretches the back), and it was all quit and serene then I did the pose and CRACCKKKK it was one of the loudest and most relieving cracks i've ever had. What you do is you lay flat down on your back straight as you possibly can get then you slowly bring your back up so you look like a laying down L (one rotation to the left) then bring your right knee up put your hand on the other side of your right knee, and turn.
If that doesnt work get someone a couple inches taller than you (the taller the better) and cross your arms on your chest. Tell them to bear hug you from behind so their hands are over your, but they're behind you. Tell them to pull their hands toward themselve and lift. your upper, and sometimes lower back will crack.
DJ-I've been a lurker for sometime, and have realized that you do turn a lot of things towards your self. That's selfish if you ask me :P.

Agreed - but it was also selfish of sam to punch me in the back of the neck for no reason.
If he hadn't done that, I would not be here now, so please, blame him not me!

DJ- I've read through a lot of your posts, and alot of seem to be the same.
You asking for pity. Nothing else. Whenever anyone gives you advice you turn it down, and just go back to Sam did it not me so blame him for my faults! NO Blame yourself for your emtional faults all sam did was punch you in the neck. I've been stabbed 3 time you don't see me crying over it get over it. Learn to live your life to a full extent. Stop derailing everyones thread also.
You seem like you want everyone to feel your pain, and that makes YOU selfish not Sam.
EDIT: have you even tried an invert table, as those are made to aline your spine and add space inbetween them it helps to stop frequent cracking as one reason we do it is to open the space between joints.
Or you could try one of those neck pump things you put it around your neck and theres a pump and it "lifts" your neck up and feels really good.

  • i looked into inversion tables and read they were very dangerous for your health… a quick google search and you'll find the same.

My friend owns one, and I've been on it it feels so good but your not suppose to be on it for extended periods of time.
