From my personal experience so far, willpower is the only treatment which works.

The less you crack by means of willpower, the less future crack-desire you'll have, thus the less future willpower you'll need. If you give in, you trigger the viscous cycle again which is initially again hard to break.

As you wrote, it doesn't work all of the time. Especially in high stress situations, I do eventually give in and crack the joint which feels the worst.
For some reason in high stress situations the uncomfortable feeling is the most pronounced. The knowledge that I can later easily control the behavior (thanks to lots of practice) makes it easy to give in once in a while for best comfort.

I have reduced my own Jointcracking behavior by at least 95% through willpower alone.

Man Sad . I'm starting to get annoyed with myself, I'm constantly trying to pop something whether it be my chest, wrists, 3 parts of my finger/thumb, toes, ankles, knees, elbows, shoulders. If I really want to quit I guess willpower is looking like the only way to go.

The problem with neck is when its stiff cracking it seems to be the only way to relieve it. I'm wanting someone to tell me i'm wrong though...

I think for people who are seriously uncomfortable when they feel like they need to crack something (especially the spine/neck), willpower can only go so far. If I can't sleep or do normal everyday things without relieving some of the pressure that's built up, willpower will have its limits. There are actually a lot of exercises that will make my spine/neck crack when I do them, so I don't think its always bad.

I put one of the neck ones in another thread... For the back: Lie on your back and pull one knee up to your chest, then the other one, then both at the same time. Then, lying on your back with your knees bent, drop your knees to the left and hold for a few seconds, same on the right. You can also get on your hands and knees and bend your spine down and then up (down like there is a weight attached to your belly-button and up like a mean cat does when it sees another cat). Also, if I just stand and stretch my arms and spine backwards (like you yawn and stretch when you wake up) I can usually get my sternum to pop... although my sternum doesn't pop nearly as much as it used to and also doesn't feel like it needs to be, which is good news. Any good pilates book will have a lot of exercises that might induce some healthy cracks. Also, I'm going to a chiropractor right now, and for $25 for under 10 minutes, the cracks that he produces better be worth something... Rolling Eyes

Yes Metakine, i have had to crack my left thumb twice to relieve pain but that is mainly it.

Neck is going to be a huge challenge.

I don't think I will ever stop clicking my neck.

Only way is if a doctor stops it clicking in the first place.

I finally gave in but my desire to crack is less. Similar to JC.
