I've wondered the same thing... there's a series of joints in there.

I crack my hands but they are not always ready to crack....for some reason after a long run or walk, etc...i can push the middle part of my hand with the help of the other hand and get 4 or 5 deep cracks that seem they go into deeper levels.....its pretty cool

Do you push your palm with your thumb?

I can crack only the right palm, but it is rare: usually about 3 times a week.

try this on for size
put your right hand out in front of you palm down
take your L hand and place the middle finger on the proximal knuckle of your R pinky finger , the one closest to your hand.
place your L thumb between your R thumb and pointer finger and apply pressure
Now use all 4 of your other fingers to curl the pinky side of your hand toward your L arm while still applying pressure with your thumb.
If you do this right you can crack: your pinky knuckle, your wrist AND your elbow all in 1 twist. (keep your arm real straight for your elbow)
I do everyday Laughing
happy cracking

practice makes perfect
it also makes those joints more flexible w greater ROM
making the chance for cracks more realistic
this is 1 of my favs when I get 3 or more cracks at once
