''Cavitation within the joint—small cavities of partial vacuum form in the fluid then rapidly collapse, producing a sharp sound. This explains the popping that can occur in any joint, such as during spinal manipulation. Synovial fluid cavitation is the most likely theory and substantial evidence exists in support of it.'' sourced from wikipedia

I read also that it takes 15mins for the fluid to refill-in which case this cannot be the source of the sound as I can click some of my joints continously-also you can feel something moving in the joint-it just feels like a more bony crack than air or liquid bursting.

Bone cracking is highly addictive and can drive you crazy with wanting to constantly crack, in my experience the cracks that feel the best are the dullest, deeping sounding ones (similar to the noise of hitting a pool ball with the cue!) that feel deepest- sharper cracks (often heard by by cracking the upper joint in the fingers) hurt more often I find.

Does any one else also find that it's only the stronger joints in your body that are clickalbe. For example, the middle fingers click the best on the hand, as do the big toes on the foot.

Some of my joints like my knuckles seem to support this theory. Others like my wrist can be done repeatedly and they have a different feel. Then there is a third category that can't be cracked repeatedly, but it has an entirely different feel than the knuckles. This is mainly my neck and back.

I can't crack my toes apart from the big one and the next one down.

My wrists i can crack every second but fingers (when i did) and neck and back, after cracking do tend to take minutes even hours so that i can then recrack them.

Didn't you ask that on another thread?

The length of time that your joint takes before you can crack it again.
